The person using it would be required to wear it on his or her head like a hair band and a small box attached to the band, which acts like a transmitter, would convert the signals generated in the brain into electronic waves that can be seen on a screen in the form of waves. These waves would be converted into words or commands via a software installed in a computer attached to the screen. Thus the thoughts of a person can be read by outside people that are communicating with that person. The transmitter works on a small battery installed within the box and no connection of electricity is required for running this new device. This data would be automatically updated with time and hence it would be easy to study and analyze the data at a later point of time. They run without noise and are cost-efficient. If Filipinos are educated about the benefits of using these ? plug-in? modes of transportation, they would be wondering why we haven? t caught up with the craze yet. Going ? green? is all the rage right now because of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Global warming threatens not only the survival of the human species, but also of other living things big and small that call Earth home. Serious efforts have been made to counter or at least minimize the adverse effects of global warming. Because emissions like carbon dioxide from fossil fuels are a major source of global warming, people have sought alternative sources of energy like solar, hydro and wind power. They have also come up with electric vehicles. Four different kinds of electric vehicles now on the market were showcased at PowerTrends 2009, a renewable energy exhibition held on Sept. 9-10 at World Trade Center in Pasay City. The e-vehicles displayed at PowerTrends? the e-jeep, e-car, e-bike and e-quad? are generally priced higher than their gasoline-powered counterparts. E-vehicle makers, however, are after advocacy, not profits, says Karl Magsuci, business planning and development manager for EVnnovations Inc. , distributor of the first Land Transportation Office-registered e-car in the Philippines. ?What we? re doing right now is education and raising awareness,? he says. All four e-vehicles have zero carbon emission. Their batteries could be charged via a simple household electric socket. Plans to build a biogas-powered recharging station are in the works. In some areas, like Puerto Princesa City and Boracay, plans to phase out gasoline-powered jeepneys are underway, with e-vehicles gradually being incorporated into their transportation system. e-car The Reva e-car, popularly known in London as G-Wiz, was first launched in Bangalore, India, in June 2001. EVnnovations Inc. wants to introduce Reva to the Philippines as a viable mode of transportation. This two-seater uses eight 48-volt deep-cycle-lead-acid batteries, which charge in eight hours at a cost of P84. Charging for two hours already powers 80 percent of Reva? s batteries, says Magsuci. Fully charged, Reva has a maximum range of 80 kilometers, 60 km when the air-con is used, and a top speed of 80 kph. By contrast, a gasoline-powered car would require about P350-worth of gas to travel 80 km. No change oil There? s virtually no maintenance involved when using the e-car, says Magsuci. ?No change oil, for instance.? The batteries have an average life span of two to three years. Changing batteries would cost around P50,000, says Magsuci. The only drawback to the e-car is the price, says Magsuci. ?There? s apprehension in the market due to the prohibitive price,? he says. The e-car is considered a luxury vehicle here, says Magsuci, thus, the cost almost doubles upon reaching our shores. Costing around $10,000 in India or around P500,000, plus import tax, Reva? s cost could reach close to a million pesos, he says. A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words: Visuals as a Persuasive Tool for War Nations all over the world constantly utilize various forms of media to rally support amongst its own people. Manuscripts, newspapers and radios were and still are of the many mediums through which political figures connect and communicate with civilians. Especially during a time of war, the government sets as one of its highest priorities, the goal of keeping its people adequately informed and behind their nation’s cause. One of the most popular and persuasive forms of propaganda has been war posters. The famous age-old saying, â€Å"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words,† is the secret that lies behind why these posters were so powerful and successful in the first place. Even though we are looking at them many centuries later, we can still feel the impact and experience the intended effects of their depictions. As Americans, many have been exposed to a range of American war posters through various means such as a school history books. There are few different war posters that are definitely worth taking a look at. Though at first glance they look extremely different, their main message is essentially the same: this war is necessary and we, as Americans, must do all that we can to help. Here’s the first poster, entitled â€Å"Don’t Let That Shadow Them† courtesy of Lawrence B. Smith. Lawrence B. Smith uses children’s innocence, helplessness and need for protection as the basis of his war poster. Through careful implementation of color and patriotic images, Smith is able to send a strong and convincing message to the American people in â€Å"Don’t Let That Shadow Touch Them.† The setting of this picture is in an open field with the shadow of the sw... ... has been used centuries upon centuries because of its effectiveness. While we can look at these political masterpieces and acknowledge the message that they are voicing, it is important that people remember to interpret with a critical eye. It’s rather funny to know that the same pictures that are convincing you that one side is the good side and the other the bad; is the same thing that people on the other side of the world, and on the other side of a war, are seeing too –but of course with the heroes and the villains reversed. Media and propaganda in general are very interesting to follow. But we should remember not to believe it all so quickly. It is important to bear in mind that the photographer or artist has a specific job to do. They must support their government and its actions. We have to keep in mind the question: who actually controls the media?

The Role of Information Technology in Education Essay

The Role of Information Technology in Education explores the potential for technology to redefine the terms of teaching and learning. Can the tools of technology break through the barriers to educational progress? What inhibits the effective use of technology? What are the perceived and the real limits of these tools? Thirteen grantees are helping to answer these questions. In 1998, we noticed that computers in classrooms, frequently donated by well-intentioned companies, too often sat idle, or if used, amounted to little more than enhanced typewriters. Making computers available in schools was not sufficient to realizing technology’s potential. The Role of Information Technology in Education initiative explores factors necessary to help technology reach its potential for learning. From the public school to the university setting, from local communities to nonprofit organizations, these grantees each offer a unique perspective on the role of technology in education. Early Assumptions The Hitachi Foundation issued the Tech Ed Letter based on these ideas: 1. A vast majority of schools have the equipment. Schools, districts, and states seem to have found money for hardware, but have invested only meagerly, if at all, in training teachers to use the technology. 2. The education sector has no systemic approach to upgrading the skills of its professionals in both pre-collegiate and higher education. If done at all, in-service technology training for teachers has been limited in number served and scope, traditional in its delivery (typically one-time sessions), or left primarily to individual teacher initiative. Training typically has not helped teachers understand how to integrate technology into the curriculum. 3. There are pockets of innovation. Individual teachers, students, and communities are delivering specific advances at every educational level. Advances can be grouped into 5 categories: pedagogy: enhanced capacity for tailoring instruction for individual students and monitoring student performance to assess instruction efficacy. constructing local content: through collaboration made possible by technology, students or professors in  several locations, drawing on local content can transform classroom practices. professional development: information technology makes possible high-quality professional development at times convenient for the teacher. Technology can overcome school scheduling problems by delivering training during off-hours or as the teacher works with students and colleagues in the classroom. collaboration: teachers and students can collaborate outside the classroom in synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (delayed response) fora, which brings far more resources, perspectives, and analysis to classroom assignments. economic efficiency: schools and universities are finding ways to use technology creatively to save money or expand productivity. 4. Technology is a tool — a means rather than an end. 5. Using technology effectively in the classroom means transforming the classroom, teaching, and learning. Productive use of technology does not mean using it solely to help slow students catch up, to occupy quick achievers, to reward good behavior, or to baby-sit. Where technology is yielding results, the classrooms are student-centered, with teachers as coaches and guides. Outside resources come to class and students go outside the classroom. Technology allows engagement, review, and especially assessment in broader, deeper ways. Portfolio Goals In addition to each project’s individual goals, we had these broad goals for the portfolio: Illustrate how technology is being used to make possible new methods, outcomes, and advancements in teaching and learning. Illustrate specifically how information technologies can improve or advance teaching or learning, and for whom. Identify unused or unexplored opportunities to strengthen teaching and learning through the use of information technology. Advance the practice of collaboration. Document and disseminate program models. Grantees California State University Dominguez Hills, Carson, CA This project is creating interactive Web Site teaching applications for K-12 teachers in the Banning/Carson Cluster (Los Angeles Unified School District). Teachers will be able to tailor self-paced and class-wide  instruction, develop and revise the applications, monitor and evaluate their approaches and student performance on specific subjects and problems, provide students with individual problem sets, and collaborate with other teachers. Catholic University of America, Washington, DC International Virtual Department for Historical Studies of Mathematics The Catholic University of America, in partnership with the Mathematical Association of America and numerous scholars at universities worldwide (including Oxford, Russian Academy of Sciences, Princeton, and Kyoto), is implementing, evaluating, and disseminating an International Virtual Department for Historical Studies of Mathematics. The Children’s Museum, Boston, MA – Teacher-to-Teacher On-Line @ The Children’s Museum The Children’s Museum’s Teacher Center is creating Teacher-to-Teacher On-Line @ The Children’s Museum, a training and discussion forum for elementary teachers to exchange activities, ideas, and curriculum as the state institutes new curriculum frameworks. Delaware Education Research and Development Center, University of Delaware, Newark, DE First-State Instructional Resource System for Teachers (FIRST) This project is establishing, testing, and refining the First-State Instructional Resource System for Teachers. FIRST is an Internet-based professional development system linked to Delaware’s state education reform movement. The site will include professional development units that illustrate effective teaching of curriculum concepts, curriculum units linked to state standards, teacher discussion and collaboration forums, teacher comments on curriculum units, related commercial curriculum resources, and assessment techniques. Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School, Los Angeles, CA The Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School started The Talons 2000 Academy – a four-year, college preparatory program with a focus on business and technology. The Academy, within the walls of ERJ/SHS, is developing a student-led business to build, refurbish, and support computers throughout ERJ/SHS, the LA Unified School District, and the community. Information and Referral/Volunteer Connection, Coeur d’Alene, ID Community Science Online uses information technology to teach science by integrating scientific content with local and regional history and discussions of contemporary events in an interactive Multi-Object-Oriented environment. Leadership,  Education, and Athletics in Partnership, New Haven, CT – LEAP Computer Learning Centers Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership, in conjunction with the Hartford and New Haven Housing Authorities, Yale University, and Connecticut College is creating parent and student outreach programs in LEAP Computer Lea rning Centers in three CT cities. LEAP is evaluating the impact of the centers’ programs on child development and technology skill building and increasing the breadth of technology training for LEAP parents and schools. New York Institute of Technology, Central Islip, NY – Educational Enterprise Zone The New York Institute of Technology, in partnership with the Nassau and Dutchess County Board of Cooperative Educational Services and seven museums is creating an Educational Enterprise Zone. Linked by low bandwidth videoconferencing and a host of other technological tools, museums, libraries, teacher centers, and others will beam their knowledge into schools. Northwest Arctic Borough School District, Kotzebue, AK – The Virtual Village Northwest Arctic Borough is creating The Virtual Village project to train student technology leaders to be mentors to teachers, students, and staff in order to help teachers incorporate modern technology so students can preserve and spread traditional cultural knowledge. The project addresses challenges and opportunities that include a transient teaching pool, isolated villages accessible only by air, and curriculum material that is not linked to village re alities or traditional knowledge and ways. Scott Lane Elementary School, Santa Clara, CA – 1000 Days to Success in Reading Scott Lane Elementary School is adding technology as it starts the second year of its 1000 Days to Success in Reading project – a warranty program that guarantees all children who entered kindergarten in September 1997 will be reading at or above grade level by the end of second grade. The project is training teachers to use technology and integrate it into the curriculum, establish a cyber-space library, allow broader interactions among teachers to expand their resources and support services, and engage parents, community volunteers, and the larger school population in the educational process. Tucson Unified School District, Tucson, AZ – Community Learning Project The Tucson Unified School District, in collaboration with The University of Arizona, is implementing the Community Learning Project at two elementary schools. Critique of The Day After Tomorrow The movie, The Day After Tomorrow, addresses the issue of global warming. The movie?s portrayal of the events caused by global warming was extreme and not very believable. Some of the information is backed up by science but most is completely off the wall and nonrealistic. The movie cited the cause of the global climate change to be the rise in temperature due to greenhouse gasses. The warmer temperatures caused the polar ice caps to melt, and the increased amount of freshwater in the ocean disrupted the North Atlantic Current. The North Atlantic Current is what is responsible for the warm temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere. If this animal froze immediately than a human surely would, especially if they were wearing nothing more than a turtleneck. Other scenes in the movie show humans frozen to death, and then others are st anding there with nothing wrong. With temperatures as low as they were supposed to be in the movie, the people who were still alive would have a horrible case of frostbite. In the movie, there was no frost bite to be seen. The temperature inconsistencies were glaring in the movie and made it seem incredibly unrealistic. There were also scenes in the movie where the characters are outrunning the freeze. There is no possible way a person could outrun temperature. There is also no way a person could survive temperatures that low. The temperature was so low that everything was immediately freezing, including flags and buildings. There is no way that a human could possibly survive a temperature that low. There were some other things that bothered me about the movie, such as the isolation of the ?ice age? The movie?s ice age was specifically isolated to the northern hemisphere. Americans were able to seek refuge from the storm by merely crossing the border into Mexico. So the storm wasn?t even isolated to the Northern Hemisphere, or even North America, it was only in the US and Canada. There are many different ways to see rejection but it could by how he or she has confidence in their life to do somet hing for a change. MRI Studies have shown in the past that the brain plays a major part for people talking about their rejections. The brain has similar emotions to someone having feelings of rejection to someone having physical pain. In another study, researchers gave normal people some advil before talking about in issue that they had in the past. Once the research was all gathered up, the researchers found out that advil can help calm down the person of someone being nervous (Winch 2013). The sensitive pain is the main way that rejection can affect of how we feel good. Rejections can also hurt our state of mind, it can make us turn into a different versions of ourselves and that is not the people that they need to be. The worst type of pain that hurts them is doing harm to their souls. This can affect the people that we love but, it really affects with the person behaving in a negative manner. Having negative thoughts is not a good thing and those people need to move on from them. Bad thoughts can t ake them out of having a group of friends and make them feel like an outsider. Making those certain people act like outsiders can make them feel alone and thats tough. It can also affect oneself when they get upset or create violence and that is not a good. No one needs that to happen in their families, friends, or to people that they have never met. They do not deserve it. Rejection can make our intelligence quotient IQ lower temporarily (Winch 2013). The brain can affect the way we think in our decision makings, school, and even work. For a short period of time people can have issues trying to think about other stuff that matters to them. It can take a few days, months, or years till they feel better about themselves but it starts now. Rejection can be bad towards young women especially around the ages of being a teenager (13 19). Girls around that age can act very dejected, pressured, and issues with either eating a lot of food or not enough food. Rejection is always built in their minds and they must find different ways to learn from it and take charge from life. There are lots of different ways to getting out of rejection. A good way is to take notice of what all has happened and see that it is a bad situation at that moment. Rejection is a part of life and feeling the heartbreak is upsetting but it is happens. It is always good for people to speak out their minds to peers around them because it can make ones self reflect on what has happened. Avoid overthinking what has happened, because they would be putting a lot of blame against themselves or putting bad images to your head and that is not good. It is always good to talk with your family and friends because friends and family are positive people in your lif e and they will always have your side. Talking to people that have been positive to you in your lifetime can help the pain go down in more ways than you can think of. It is always better to talk friends and family because it makes the individual, the real being that they are. Also the peers want them to do good again like they have done in the past (Whipps 2016). Engaging in manual work or working out can usually soothe rejection. It is ok to allow oneself to feel whatever they need to feel because he or she can take it. It is not a bad thing because they can do it and be strong. They should not jump into anything that is bad. On the other hand try to take things slow and time will be on their side. If things dont go as planned it is ok, just move on from it. Another good thing is do your best to believe there is something better. What that means is to try to put yourself in a better mindset to do what you want to do. A persons anxiety can say things like What if they never get another job? or They are going to end up living with your parents forever and alone. Those people thinking it are having a hard time listening to it and it is difficult to move on from. Try to trick their mind by saying stuff like There is something else out there for me, I cant give up just yet, or This wasnt my right path. Those types of phrases can help but it all starts with themselves trying to do the things that they know they can do. In all, taking away all of the bad thoughts and putting the good ones first helps for most people. Making themselves have aspirations that there is more important things out. They do not have to do what they dont want to do even if that means if one person likes you, you can politely say Yes or Sorry, no thank you.Try to find so meone else or something else that matches with their interest. When dealing with rejection think of a few things. Just tell say that people have their opinions, it is ok, let it be their lost. Try their best to not take it to hard on themselves directly. Rejection can be used as a miracle that can not be seen. Be logical about it if he or she can do whatever to look for someone new who really cares for them, having no love lost between each other, and shows what makes them, them. Another way is to think about all the things that made them a different person. This helps with their mental state of mind. It would also help your mental state of mind if you also wrote down their emotions because it could make them feel better to get their emotions out (Goldsmith 2015). See it as the opposite person or jobs misfortune because they definitely do not see how great you really are. People need to learn from their mistakes because we accept helpful guidance and it can enhance upon us. It doesnt show that their broken but it is a good way to exist and understand them. Rejection doesnt mean there is something bad with themselves. It just means they got to work on each other first and then work on themselves too. In others way, look at the normal situation of existence and understand to care and support them. Do not ever give up because some people just want to stay in one place and not do anything. He is disappointed because he really wants a girlfriend and he wants his friends to be happy that he has someone that he truly cares about. The therapist asks if he likes dating a lot of girls. He says Yes, but I want to be with one person and not turn my head to someone else. I do treat women with respect but for some reason they are not drawn to me like I am to each of them. The therapist then says to Eddie, do you know which girl that you like. Eddie replies No because everyone that I met is special but Id like to be with just someone that cares for me then someone who doesnt care for me at all. The therapist then says that he should find out what that he needs to find some that is positive and makes him happy. Rejection can be really tough. There are two ways to handle rejection: those people can handle it on their own or there is the other group of people that need their family and friends to guide them with their journey of life. Everyone struggles with rejection if you take it for a short time period you will feel better but, if they take it a few months or a year it can be tough on themself. If they get the help they deserve, their life can feel better. Therapy can help a person or a group of people when life is not going right.
